Projected top players: Linebacker class 'lacks star power'
It's not the year of the linebacker in Georgia, at least not according to the recruiting gurus. Only two - Roswell's Tre Lamar and Oconee County's Jaleel Laguins - are rated among the 40 best senior prospects in Georgia.
"This class lacks star power at linebacker in Georgia, but there is depth in terms of run-stuffing inside linebackers who are not afraid to come down and lower their helmet against the run," said Kipp Adams, 247Sports national recruiting analyst.
Here is a list of 10 outstanding Georgia linebackers. It is based on their production as high school players more than their college potential.
*Jeffrey Allison, Hughes (6-1, 235) - Allison was the leading tackler (80 solo, 64 assists) last season on a 9-3 team that featured Montavious Atkinson (Auburn) and D'Andre Walker (Georgia). Allison is a mid-major recruit.
*Tru'Self Cooper, Benedictine (6-0, 230) - The best returning player on the Class AA champions, Cooper averaged more than 13 tackles per game in 2013. He's not a major recruit but has a reported offer from Georgia Southern.
*Todd Bradley, Valdosta (5-11, 210) - Bradley made 20 tackles for losses and intercepted three passes as Valdosta's middle linebacker last season. He is committed to Georgia Southern.
*Tre Lamar, Roswell (6-3, 230) - The most highly recruited linebacker in Georgia is Lamar, who is committed to Clemson. Lamar had 78 tackles - 19 for losses, one a safety - for Roswell's 8-4 team last season. He's rated the No. 7 inside linebacker prospect in the country.
*Jaleel Laguins, Oconee County (6-2, 210) - Laguins made 64 tackles and four sacks last season for an 8-4 team that had its first winning season since 2004. He played a little running back and ran for 198 yards on 31 carries. Laguins, rated the consensus No. 20 prospect in the state, reportedly favors Georgia over Auburn, Tennessee and others.
*Jeremiah Littles, Wayne County (6-3, 225) - Littles was the Region 3-AAAA defensive player of the year in 2014, when he made 121 tackles and four interceptions for a 6-6 team. He has small-college offers.
*Nathan McBride, Vidalia (6-2, 220) - McBride, a junior, was the Region 2-AA defensive player of the year after racking up 125 tackles in 2014. He also rushed for 638 yards. McBride is rated the consensus No. 4 junior prospect in Georgia. Alabama and Georgia are his reported college leaders.
