Here’s a look at a few of the top games this weekend, as well as a handful of others of note.
(No. 2 AJC, No. 4 Private Power Rating) Prince Avenue Christian at (No. 5 Public PR) Commerce. This is the first of a two-game, mid-season, mini-gauntlet for Prince Avenue (5-0, 3-0 in Region 8). In his third season in Bogart, former Camden County head coach Jeff Herron has his wing-T offense and 3-3-5 defense clicking on all cylinders, as the Wolverines have won all of their games this season by an average score of 44-7. A win at Commerce (3-2, 2-1) Friday, and another next week over resurgent Athens Academy (5-0, 3-0) would most likely mean an undefeated regular season for PAC.
(No. 4 AJC, No. 4 Public PR) Irwin County at (No. 2 Public PR) Charlton County. Charlton (3-1, 1-1 in Region 2) travelled north to Ashburn and suffered one of the worst defeats in the history of its storied program, 44-0 to upstart Turner County. This week Charlton returns home to Folkston. But here comes Irwin (3-1-1, 2-0), winners of its last two games, bent on claiming its second consecutive region title and returning to the public school state title game for the second year in a row.
(No. 5 AJC, No. 9 Public PR) Marion County at (No. 9 Private PR) St. Anne-Pacelli. Both teams bounced back from tough losses with big wins on Friday. Marion (3-1, 2-0 in Region 4) hammered Schley County 46-0, while St. Anne-Pacelli (4-1, 2-1) kept Dooly County reeling, 30-8. A win for Marion will keep the Eagles on track for winning their fifth region title in six years. A win for Pacelli will put the Vikings back in the hunt for their first region title since 2004.
