For the past two seasons, Morgan County has been growing its own version of the famed Georgia Tech trio of Brian Oliver, Kenny Anderson and Dennis Scott in the early 1990s that was dubbed, "Lethal Weapon 3."
This weekend, Stevin Greene, Tyrin Lawrence and Alec Woodard will lead a Bulldogs program onto the court in the Phenom's Palmetto Winter Classic at Ben Lippen High School in Columbia, S.C., to prove again why their guard play rivals any combination of players in the classification.
The latest victory, an 89-87 shootout against Ridge View, S.C., on Thursday night in Columbia, set up a Friday night game against undefeated Holly Springs, N.C., a team rated No. 3 in the HighSchoolOT.com Top 25 Poll.
A large portion -- OK, maybe 80-ish percent -- of the Morgan offense comes from guards Greene, Lawrence and Woodard, all seniors. Lawrence, a 6-foot-3, 170-pound shooting guard, is listed as a three-star recruit by Rivals. Greene, a 5-9 guard, is speedy and dangerous on the first step. Woodard, a 6-3 guard, has committed to Austin Peay.
Against Ridge View, Woodard scored 23 points, Greene 23 and Lawrence 21. The rest of the Morgan team combined for 22 points.
Since Morgan's only loss, 56-53 to Wenonah, Ala., in the Braggin' Rights showcase in Birmingham on Dec. 8, the No. 2 Bulldogs have been flawless. Morgan, a semifinalist last year, responded to the defeat with four consecutive victories, three of them in region play. Morgan has defeated Jackson 66-61, Jefferson 70-63, and Jackson County 82-23.
