Discovery, the newest high school in Gwinnett County, has promoted assistant coach and former NFL wide receiver Efrem Hill to replace Frank Hepler as head football coach.

Hepler was hired at Forsyth Central in January.

Hill was Discovery’s wide receivers coach last season, when Discovery played a JV schedule. He played 10 seasons in the NFL, CFL and Arena League. Hill spend three seasons at Berkmar before coming to Discovery.

Hill is a graduate of North Springs. A decade ago, he was one of three North Springs graduates in the NFL, a surprising number given the program’s total of three winning seasons in 30 years. The others were Verron Haynes and Channing Crowder.

Discovery had been the only head-coaching job open in Gwinnett until last week, when Grayson head coach Mickey Conn left to join the staff at Clemson.

Discovery will play a full region schedule this fall in Region 6-AAAAAAA, which includes North Gwinnett, Mill Creek, Collins Hill and Peachtree Ridge. Discovery will play its first varsity game at home Aug. 19 against Jefferson.
