Colquitt County keeps an eye on California, hopes for national title
By Todd Holcomb
Dec 18, 2015Colquitt County’s season is done, but the pursuit of a mythical national title continues.
The Packers are ranked No. 2 by three national polls – USA Today, MaxPreps and the High School Football 100. They are No. 3 in the PrepNation poll.
The No. 1 team in two of those polls, Centennial of Corona, Calif., has a game left Saturday in Sacramento against storied De La Salle of Concord, another nationally ranked team. The No. 1 team in the PrepNation poll, Katy of Texas, also has a game Saturday against Lake Travis of Austin. Centennial is No. 2 in that poll.
The only poll that locks Colquitt out is USA Today’s, which has Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas in the lead. Gorman’s season is complete. No Georgia team has been recognized as a national champion since Valdosta in 1992.
Colquitt coach Rush Propst made a pitch for his team in a recent interview with MaxPreps.
"Football is just exploding in Georgia," he said. "I've talked with Nick Saban and Will Muschamp and Ed Orgeron and all agree, nobody is playing football any better than kids in Georgia. Not California, not Texas and not Florida."
Colquitt finished its Georgia season 15-0 after beating Roswell 30-13 last week in the Class AAAAAA championship game.
Propst explains head-butt
Propst also commented recently on an incident that occurred in the semifinals against Mill Creek. Propst head-butted his place-kicker, Luis Martinez, on the sidelines. Martinez was wearing a helmet. Propst was left bloodied, although the wound occurred when he turned his head and accidently hit another player’s helmet that had a small pin sticking out of it.
"We were playing like crap," Propst said. "After the head-butt I think we allowed two first downs and won going away. I might have to head-butt someone every time if we get results like that."
Propst said some community leaders ‘’didn’t think it was so funny right away’’ but have been appeased with his explanation.
