*Best player: It's really Trezmen Marshall (see "Highly recruited" below). But he gets his due. That's not always the case for Bo Lawson, a quarterback tucked away at small-town Vienna. The Dooly County quarterback passed for 2,543 yards and 35 touchdowns with only five interceptions last season. And he ran for 1,574 yards and 15 scores, that in just 12 games for a 5-7 team.
*Best position: Running back. That's generally the case in Class A. Chris Stovall (1,701), Brandon Mackey (1,682) and Travon Matthews (1,520) each had more than 1,500 yards last season.
*Highly recruited: Marshall. He's a top-100 national prospect who plays running back and linebacker and has starred on two state-championship teams. Injured to begin last season, Marshall played in only nine games but rushed for 841 yards and 19 touchdowns on just 92 carries.
*That's interesting: Commerce two-way lineman Levi Pate has personal weightlifting bests of 365 pounds in the power clean, 405 in the bench press and 615 in the squat. GHSF Daily is no weightlifting expert but can report that Nick Chubb while at Cedartown in 2012 set a state weightlifting competition record totaling 1,430 with lifts of 395 in the power clean, 390 on the bench and 645 in the squat. Pate's total of 1,385 isn't too far off.
*Snubbed? Eric Dixon. The Emanuel County Institute senior running back rushed for 1,396 yards and 20 touchdowns last season. He averaged 7.5 yards per carry.
*What else is new? It's hard to get noticed when you play at a school of 252 students whose football team wins only four games. That's especially the case if you're 5 feet, 6 inches, which is a stretch based on his HUDL film. But Brandon Mackey's numbers are huge, and his highlights are fun to watch. The Wheeler County running back ran for 1,682 yards on just 127 attempts in 10 games last season. That's 13.2 yards per carry. He ran for 271 against Emanuel County Institute. He piled up 2,232 all-purpose yards.
