The Tucker boys basketball team has the regular-season title in 4-AAAAAA wrapped up, but the races for first place in the other seven Class AAAAAA regions remain up in the air with just two weeks left in the regular season.

Tucker, which moved to No. 1 in the Class AAAAAA rankings this week and was the state runner-up last season, is 19-3 overall and 13-0 in Region 4, three-and-a-half games ahead of second-place Mundy’s Mill with three games remaining. Tucker and Mundy’s Mill meet in the regular-season finale on Jan. 28 in a rematch of a game Tucker won 62-53 on the road in December.

The only other first-place team with more than a one-game lead is No. 10 Brunswick of Region 2. The Pirates are 5-0 in region play, two games ahead of second-place Effingham County (3-2).

The most intriguing race is in Region 5, where Tri-Cites and Hughes sit at the top of the standings with two losses each. Tri-Cities is officially a game ahead of Hughes because it has won two more region games, but Hughes beat Tri-Cities in both regular-season meetings and would hold the tiebreaker advantage in the event of a tie. Those two teams have combined to win the past three state titles in AAAAAA, Hughes in 2017 and 2018 and Tri-Cities last year.

Another race to watch is in Region 7, where five teams have either three of four losses in region play. Cambridge and Chattahoochee begin the week tied for first place at 9-3, but Johns Creek (8-4), Pope (8-4) and North Atlanta (7-4) aren’t far behind.

Here are the boys region standings going into the week (with region records, followed by overall records). Note that the records are taken from MaxPreps, the official record-keeper for the Georgia High School Association, and that some of those records may not have been fully updated.
