Region 1 played a pair of region games this past week. In them, Ameriucs-Sumter cruised past Dougherty 43-7 and Northside-Columbus exploded for a 48-15 win over Shaw. Carver-Columbus (17-0 over Spencer) and Hardaway (49-0 over Kendrick) each won lopsided non-region games, Cairo dropped to 0-2 with a 15-7 loss to Bainbridge and Columbus and Westover rested on bye weeks.
Region 2
Mary Persons quarterback J.T. Hartage threw three touchdown passes to Deadrek Alford and rushed for a score, and teammate Quen Wilson accounted for 158 rushing yards and three touchdowns off 15 carries in the Bulldogs’ 48-17 win over Jackson. All six teams in Region 2 left the field victorious this past Friday. Perry topped Northeast-Macon 30-19, West Laurens shutout Crisp County 16-10, Howard sprinted past First Presbyterian Day 50-14, Spalding topped Carver-Atlanta 36-33 and Upson-Lee outclassed East Paulding 21-16
Region 3
Richmond Academy defeated Westside-Augusta 34-0 and became the only team in Region 3 that is taking a 2-0 record into Week 3. Cross Creek lost 6-0 to Butler, Baldwin lost 41-17 to Jones County, Burke County lost 25-24 to Ware County after the Gators’ successful 2-point conversion in overtime and Thomson was off with a bye.
Region 4
Eastside used three clutch turnovers to defeat Class AAAAAAA Newton 27-20 and was outgained 443 to 247 by the Rams in total yardage. Running back Taylor Carter had 22 carries for 128 yards and ran in the game-winning touchdown early in the fourth quarter before the defense closed out the victory. Druid Hills fell 35-10 to South Atlanta, Salem got beat 23-6 by Class AAAAAA’s Coffee, Luella got shutout 19-0 by Trinity Christian, North Clayton lost 31-7 to Woodland-Stockbridge and Henry County lost 24-12 to Union Grove. Hampton was on its bye week and Woodward Academy led 42-7 at the half of its 58-27 win over Grady.
Region 5
Sandy Creek held Whitewater to a field goal and kickoff return touchdown in a 49-10 road win to open its season. Troup also had an impressive road win to open its season, defeating Ridgeland 32-0. The Tigers jumped out to a 15-0 halftime lead with Kobe Hudson touchdown passes to Jamari Thrash and Trea Mitchell. Hudson added a rushing touchdown early in the second half and a Heslyn Martinez field goal gave the Tigers a 25-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter before Tyree Carlisle iced the game with a 3-yard touchdown run. Cedartown bounced back from a Week 1 loss to Rockmart and ran past Alexander 33-7. Chapel Hill shutout Ola 28-7 and Central-Carroll got beat 51-7 to Rockmart.
Region 6
Ridgeland lost 32-0 to Troup as previously mentioned. Heritage-Ringgold was dominated 40-0 by rival Ringgold after beating them for the first time in program history a year ago. Gilmer fell short 20-19 to Rabun Gap. LaFayette defeated Fannin County 28-20 and Southeast Whitfield held off Murray County 21-16. Pickens and Northwest Whitfield were on byes.
Region 7
Flowery Branch was on the bye and Chestatee’s 58-0 loss to Dawson County was the only one seen in what proved to be a dominant week for the rest of Region 7. Blessed Trinity dispatched Class AAAAAAA South Forsyth 35-6, Marist surged to a 33-0 halftime lead and beat Lovett 40-20, West Hall beat Johnson-Gainesville 41-8 and White County beat Lumpkin County 40-7. The Denmark Danes scored a 43-0 victory over Cherokee Bluff in the program’s first-ever game. Quarterback Ben Whitlock finished the night 10 of 13 passing for 234 yards and five touchdowns, while the defense dominated the visiting Bears.
Region 8
North Oconee moved to 2-0 and surpassed its win total from last season with a 17-13 win over Apalachee. Stephens County survived a 10-7 battle with Hart County. Oconee County lost 17-10 to rival Clarke Central and Madison County fell 42-35 to Habersham Central. St. Pius snapped its 15-game non-region losing streak with a 45-21 win over Dunwoody.
