Class AAA blog: A look at the region standings heading into the weekend

Heading into the weekend, the region standings and region games take center stage with just weeks before the league tournaments begin.

On the girls side, one region – 5-AAA – has two programs, No. 9 Cedar Grove and an unranked Westminster program tied at 8-1 at the top of the league. In 8-AAA, No. 2 Jefferson (9-0) leads over Hart County (7-3) in the standings. In 7-AAA, No. 3 Greater Atlanta Christian (7-2) leads over No. 7 North Hall (7-3) and the Spartans beat North Hall 49-47 on Jan. 17.

Here is a look at the region standings in each of the eight leagues.

AAA Girls Rankings and weekend schedule

1. Johnson-Savannah – Will host Groves for a 3-AAA game on Friday and travel to Class AAAAAA Sequoyah on Saturday.
2. Jefferson – travels to East Jackson on Friday for an 8-AAA game. 3
3. Greater Atlanta Christian -- travels to Cherokee Bluff for a 7-AAA game on Friday. 
4. Beach – travels to Jenkins for a 3-AAA game on Friday. 
5. Pierce County – travels to Long County on Friday for a 2-AAA game then travels to AAAAA Ware County on Saturday. 
6. Dawson County – hosts Lumpkin County for a 7-AAA game on Friday. 
7. North Hall – off this weekend. Will travel to Lumpkin County on Tuesday.
8. Ringgold – travels to North Murray for a 6-AAA game on Friday.
9. Cedar Grove – hosts Stone Mountain in a 5-AAA game on Friday. 
10. Sonoraville – travels to Murray County for a 6-AAA game on Friday. 

For the boys, a 5-AAA game between top-ranked Pace Academy and No. 6 Westminster highlights the weekend.

Pace is riding an eight-game winning streak since losing to Tennessee’s Briarcrest Christian on Dec. 27 and it defeated Westminster, handedly, 60-32 on Dec. 13 at Pace. This time, Pace will travel to Westminster. Junior Matthew Cleveland, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard, listed as a four-star recruit by 247Sports, leads with 23.3 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.3 steals per game.

Westminster lost to No. 7 Lovett on Jan. 17 but rebounded with a 79-38 victory over Stone Mountain on Tuesday.
