Breaking down the stat sheet for top-ranked Calhoun
Riding the momentum from its 2017 state championship, the Calhoun Yellow Jackets have been ranked No. 1 for seven consecutive weeks.
And entering Week 8 of the Class AAA season, Hal Lamb's program shows no signs of slowing down.
Calhoun has not been challenged, with its closest margin of victory at 24 points in victories against Ridgeland (45-21) in the Corky Kell Classic at Rome's Barron Stadium and against North Murray (34-10) in its second region contest on Sept. 14. Calhoun's other victories have been blowouts, including a 38-0 thrashing of Sonoraville.
So let's look under the hood to see what's making Calhoun run so smoothly:
-- Quarterbacks --
-- Gavin Gray, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound pro-style quarterback, has completed 86 of 130 passes for 1,077 yards and nine touchdowns.
-- Notable: Gray has thrown four interceptions this season. Two backup quarterbacks have contributed to yardage, but neither has passed for a touchdown. The Yellow Jackets have amassed 1,168 passing yards.
-- Receiving --

-- Notable: Bralin Barton and Collin Baggett each have a touchdown reception.
-- Rushing --
-- Zach Fuller, a 5-8, 190-pound running back, might not be the biggest player on the field, but he makes up for it with sheer drive and power. His 403 rushing yards lead the Yellow Jackets. He has rushed for 11 touchdowns on 65 carries with one fumble. He averages 6.2 yards per carry and 80.6 yards per game.
-- Jonkell Tolbert, a 5-10, 175-pound back, has rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. He averages 8.5 yards per carry, 30 yards per game.

-- Defense --
-- Davis Allen, a Clemson-commitment, is a 6-5, 220-pound linebacker and leads a talented defense that's only has given up five touchdowns – three passing and two rushing.
