1. The Georgia Tech golf team, ranked No. 11 in the country, finished its fall schedule with its second win of the season, taking the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational in Princeville, Hawaii, with a monster final round on Tuesday.
The Yellow Jackets shot a four-player total of 264, 24 strokes below par. The total was two shots off the team's all-time record for 18 holes. Anders Albertson and Jacob Joiner both shot 7-under-par 65 to lead the Jackets. The team’s three-round score of 809 was 55-under par, the team’s second-best score relative to par by one stroke.
Ollie Schniederjans, the top-ranked amateur in the world, finished in a tie for second with a three-round total of 199(-17), three shots in back of the low score.
"This was certainly one of our better rounds and tournaments," said coach Bruce Heppler in a statement. "This was a total team win. Our seniors played great, which is what we need to be successful.”
Wednesday, the school announced that it will begin a redevelopment of the team's practice facility off of 14th Street. The facility will include indoor hitting bays, clubhouse and a par-3 course.
2. The Tech men's swimming team made the top 25 coaches poll, its first appearance since Dec. 2012, debuting at No. 15 in the first poll of the season in late October. The Jackets are one of six ACC teams in the poll.
Tech’s top swimmer is All-American Andrew Kosic, who owns top-15 times nationally in the 50-, 100-and 200-yard freestyles.
“It’s obviously great to be recognized at this point in the season,” said coach Courtney Shealy Hart in a statement.. “Our guys have been putting in hard work daily and we’re swimming very well.”
Tech will swim Georgia and Savannah College of Art and Design Friday at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. The meet begins at 4 p.m. and admission is free
3. Tech's men's doubles team of Eduard Segura and Carlos Benito won the USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational in Orlando Sunday. Segura and Benito were in the tournament's B draw and won four consecutive matches to take the title. They beat a Princeton team 6-2, 6-4, in the championship.
4. The Tech softball team, which is finishing up fall practice, will play an exhibition game against the USSSA Florida Pride, a professional fast-pitch team that includes a two-time U.S. Olympian (Kelly Kretschman) and a two-time collegiate player of the year (Danielle Lawrie).
The game will be played Saturday at noon at Mewborn Field. Admission is free. It will be the last game of the fall for the Yellow Jackets, who were undefeated in seven games, six of them against teams outside of Division I.
The team is also hosting a game between the Wounded Warrior softball team and a team of notable Tech athletes, including Joe Hamilton, Randy Rhino, Marvin Lewis and Roddy Jones. The game will be played Nov. 16 (Sunday) at Mewborn Field at 11 a.m. Admission is free, but donations will be taken to benefit the Wounded Warrior team.
