A cold front stalled to the south of metro Atlanta will be responsible for clouds and an increased chance of rain Wednesday, but it has the added benefit of cooling things down.

The extra cloud cover is keeping temperatures at bay Wednesday, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. It will be a muggy day, and there is a 40% chance of a shower or storm, but Atlanta should top out at 82 degrees this afternoon.

“We’re usually in the 90s this time of year,” Monahan said. “We’re going to be in the low 80s, so enjoy the break from the summertime heat.”

Monahan said there is a 30% chance of a shower for the morning drive before rain becomes more widespread this afternoon. Most of North Georgia is starting the day dry, with a few sprinkles and showers dotting the mountains and areas near Athens.

By lunchtime, the rain chance increases to 40%. There could be a few slow spots on the roads at noon for those heading out to lunch, Monahan said.

“By the ride home from work, some scattered storms around,” he said. “It will be a little wet after work, after school today as we track some clouds and showers across North Georgia.”

Monahan said a cold front that moved through metro Atlanta earlier this week is now stuck to the south, and it will stay there the next few days. After a comfortable start Wednesday morning, he expects humidity to rise quickly and remain elevated all the way through the end of the week

“That’s going to give us some good chances for some heavier downpours,” he said. Rain and storms are 60% likely on Friday, according to the latest forecast.

Monahan is expecting the region to dry out a bit for the weekend, and it will get warmer as the sun comes out from behind the clouds. By Sunday, showers and storms are 40% likely and afternoon temperatures will rise into the middle 80s, he said.

Atlanta's projected high is 82 degrees Wednesday with a 40% chance of a shower or storm.
