Most of metro Atlanta is waking up to temperatures in the 40s Wednesday morning, but a big swing in temperatures is in store for the afternoon.
A clear sky and lots of sunshine will help the city warm up to a projected high of 79 degrees, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. These cool mornings and warm afternoons make for pleasant conditions for enjoying the outdoors, and Monahan said they have the added benefit of boosting fall color.
“The weather we have got right now really could help those fall leaves look really, really good over the next several weeks,” he said.
Monahan said the mountains are the first to reach peak fall color around the middle of October. Metro Atlanta will see the best leaf displays in late October, and south of the city won’t get in on the action until the first half of November.
Dry conditions over the next several weeks could also contribute to richer color, Monahan said. There is no rain in the forecast for North Georgia through at least next week, and possibly beyond.
“Dry weather is going to stick around through today and through tomorrow,” he said. “As we go into Friday, a little more moisture in the air, so we will see a few more clouds around, but no rain in the forecast as a front moves by.”
The front will help to drop temperatures in time for the weekend. After topping out in the low 80s on Friday, Atlanta should see highs in the low 70s on Saturday and Sunday, according to Monahan.
Mostly sunny conditions should return for the second half of the weekend, he said.
