For most of North Georgia, the worst is behind us Wednesday morning.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms swept through the region overnight and continue to move south and east of Atlanta before sunrise. Behind the steadier stuff, some light showers remain, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon.

The showers are quick-moving, however. There is still plenty of sunshine in Wednesday’s forecast, Deon said.

“The rain will not be with us all day long,” she said. “This will not be a washout, but we are getting off to a wet start to our Wednesday. Get ready for some wet roadways.”

The heaviest rain has already cleared Atlanta, but there are still a few pockets of downpours drenching the southern suburbs at the start of the morning commute. Deon said I-20 commuters can expect “a pretty wet go from Conyers over to the Greensboro area.”

She expects the rain to continue until about 9 a.m., and then all of North Georgia will get a chance to dry out. Until then, widespread fog is contributing to poor visibility on roads all over metro Atlanta.

“We are dealing with some heavy rainfall in spots but all in all it’s on the move, so it is not going to add up to a whole lot as we go through the day today,” Deon said. “We are going to see a break on Thursday and then rain returns on Friday.”

With temperatures in the 40s Wednesday morning, North Georgia is starting the day both wet and cool. Deon expects the sky to clear out by lunchtime, making the way for temperatures to rise into the mid- to upper 50s. A projected high of 57 degrees is right on target for this time of year, she said.

“We’ll finish out the afternoon with some sunshine,” she said. “With a clearing sky, temperatures are going to turn cool once again. By later this evening, we’ll drop back into the 40s by 7 or 8 p.m., and then we are down into the 30s overnight.”

The next chance of rain arrives Friday morning, when showers are 60% likely. By the end of the work week, some areas could record up to an inch of rainfall, according to Channel 2. More rain in Saturday’s forecast could push accumulations past 2 inches.

“We will be in and out of these wet conditions over the next couple of days and into the weekend,” Deon said.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said North Georgia will be "in and out of the wet conditions" for the next several days.

Despite wet roads, the Wednesday morning drive is off to a pretty smooth start, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. Only one crash was causing trouble for commuters at 6:30 a.m.

A crash on I-75 North had two right lanes blocked at Forest Parkway in Clayton County. The Traffic Center suggests commuters use Tara Boulevard and I-675 until the crash clears.
