With light rain possible for the morning drive and a chance of thunderstorms this afternoon, it’s a good idea to keep an umbrella handy Wednesday.

Showers are falling at daybreak in Buckhead and Midtown, and there is about a 20-30% chance of rain for the rest of metro Atlanta on Wednesday morning, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. Later this afternoon, that chance increases to 40%, and the rain could be much heavier.

For most, Wednesday is off to a foggy but dry start.

“There’s still going to be some wet pavement from that rain yesterday and rain overnight, but no storms right now,” Monahan said. “That will change this afternoon we get into the heating of the day. Scattered, slow-moving downpours with heavy rain likely, frequent lightning (and) a lot of thunder.”

Monahan said Wednesday afternoon will not only see a chance of storms but also high humidity. It could make for uncomfortable conditions once temperatures reach their peaks. Atlanta’s projected high is 88 degrees, but the humidity will make it feel hotter outside.

Those with ambitions to exercise or work outdoors Wednesday would do best to head out early, Monahan said. Thursday could be an even wetter day as a cold front moves in, bringing with it a 70% chance of widespread showers and storms.

“Our weather trend is going in the right direction in time for the weekend,” Monahan said. “High chances of rain today and tomorrow, but those rain chances really start to drop as we go toward the weekend.”

Storms are 30% likely Friday as the cold front moves out, according to the latest forecast. On Saturday, Atlanta could wake up to temperatures in the 60s and low humidity for an early taste of fall weather.

Sunshine, mostly dry conditions and highs in the 80s are in Channel 2′s forecast both Saturday and Sunday.

Atlanta's projected high is 88 degrees Wednesday with a 40% chance of an afternoon storm. The chance of a morning shower is lower at about 20%, according to Channel 2 Action News.
