Metro Atlanta is waking up to temperatures in the 30s Tuesday, and a light breeze is making it feel even colder outside.
The chilly start is thanks to a passing cold front that brought showers and storms to the region Monday, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon. Atlanta will get a bit of a break from the rain Tuesday, but Deon said it won’t be long before showers return to the forecast.
“We are drier, but we are much colder so be prepared for that chill in the air as you make your way outside,” she said. “As far as the rain, we officially picked up just a little over a third-inch in Atlanta. We are going to see that rain returning.”
Deon said a 5 to 10 mph breeze “is just enough movement” to make temperatures in the upper 30s feel more like freezing in Atlanta, and it feels like the 20s in northwest Georgia. Those numbers will eventually rise into the lower 50s, but not until after the lunch hour, she said.
Atlanta’s projected high is 54 degrees, four degrees below average for this time of year.
“We are going to see some sunshine, but we are also going to get the clouds building back in,” Deon said. “There’s not much of a warmup.”
Most of North Georgia will not need the umbrella Tuesday, but she said there is a 10% chance of a passing, isolated shower for those on the Southside. According to Channel 2, rain chances will increase overnight and into early Wednesday, when more widespread showers are possible in metro Atlanta during the morning commute.
“By Wednesday afternoon, we’re back underneath a clearing sky, and cool temperatures, well, those will be a thing of the past,” Deon said.
Temperatures will return to more seasonal levels with upper 50s Wednesday, she said, and numbers in the 60s are in Thursday’s forecast. Even warmer weather is predicted Friday, but a projected high of 70 degrees will come with a 60% chance of a shower.
Deon said the rain will stick around into the start of the weekend. By Saturday, Atlanta could pick up another 1 to 2 inches of rainfall.
“It is going to trend a little bit wetter,” she said. “For now, though, we are catching a bit of a break.”

The dry pavement Tuesday morning is working in favor of metro Atlanta traffic. There are no major delays on the interstates at 6:30 a.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
“Big picture: Everything is looking fantastic around town,” traffic reporter Heather Catlin said. Trip times are holding steady at the start of the morning commute, she said.
In Marietta, a fallen tree is blocking Stilesboro Road at Old Mountain Road. Drivers can use Old 41 Highway to get around the closure, according to the Traffic Center.
Expect road closures in Clayton County on Tuesday morning when the community honors slain Clayton County field training Officer Henry Laxon. Several local roads will be closed to allow a procession to pass.
The procession will depart Southlake Mall in Morrow at 8:45 a.m. and travel Tara Boulevard to First Baptist Church Jonesboro, where a public visitation is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. A funeral at the church is planned for noon.
