North Georgia will get a shot at rain Tuesday, but it’s not likely to do much to ease drought conditions after a particularly dry October.
According to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan, rain chances will increase after sunset, when a cold front approaches from the west. There is also a chance of damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning and hail, and an isolated tornado is possible.
The National Weather Service considers the risk of severe weather to be marginal, a Level 1 out of 5.
“It’s our lowest-level severe weather risk, but as we go toward sunset tonight, I want you to be weather-aware,” Monahan said. “We’re going to see some rain. We could use the rain — we could do without the storms.”
Atlanta and its suburbs are experiencing moderate drought. Rainfall totals are running more than 4 inches behind typical levels for this time of year, Monahan said. For most of the day Tuesday, conditions will stay dry and there will be no umbrellas needed, he said.
Clouds will increase and wind will pick up ahead of the cold front, according to Monahan. Tuesday won’t be as bright at sunny as the day before, he said, but it will still be a pretty nice afternoon with a projected high of 77 degrees.
Monahan said rain activity should be brief and confined to the evening hours as showers and storms move west to east.
“There will be some storms that could have some damaging wind gusts,” he said. “This time of year, always got to look out for a little rotation. A brief spin-up tornado is not impossible, but it’s not likely either. We’ll keep an eye on the radar this afternoon and this evening.”
By Wednesday morning, all the rain and storms should be gone. Wednesday will be breezy and cooler on the other side of the front, and afternoon temperatures are not expected to leave the 60s.
The next chance of rain arrives this weekend with showers 40% likely on Saturday, according to the latest forecast.
