Tuesday should be drier and sunnier than the rainy Labor Day holiday weekend, which brought flash flooding to parts of North Georgia.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon expects only isolated showers and storms on Tuesday, with just a 30% chance of development during the hottest part of the day. Low clouds and fog blanketing the area this morning will eventually clear, Deon said, and should pose no rain threat to kids waiting at the bus stops.

“They could possibly need the umbrella later on today, but I think for the most part rain gear is not really a requirement, because we are going to see much improved conditions as far as our rain chances go,” she said.

Rain chances Tuesday are hit-or-miss, she said. As far as temperatures are concerned, Atlanta is right on track for this time of year. After a muggy start in the low 70s, the city is expected to reach a high of 86 this afternoon as the sun comes out from behind the clouds.

According to Deon, a frontal boundary is still stalled to the west, and North Georgia isn’t done with the rain just yet.

After a mainly dry Tuesday, scattered rain is in the forecast Wednesday and Thursday, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon.

“We’ll have limited moisture around today,” she said. “We still have it, but it is just really going to keep those rain chances down for today as well as into Wednesday. But tropical moisture will surge northward Thursday going into Friday and into the weekend, and that’s going to allow those rain chances to really pick up.”

Showers and storms are 40% likely Wednesday as a cold front moves through the region, she said. Rain will become more widespread Friday and for the weekend, which could exacerbate flooding issues for the far northern part of the state.

Heavy weekend rain prompted Gov. Brian Kemp on Sunday to declare a state of emergency in Chattooga and Floyd counties. In Summerville, more than 10 inches of rain fell over the weekend and the Chattooga River rose almost 17 feet, according to the National Weather Service.

There are no active flood watches or warnings in northwest Georgia on Tuesday morning.

As rain chances increase later this week, temperatures will come down. Deon said Atlanta is looking at highs in the upper 70s this weekend with more rain and less sunshine around.

Atlanta's projected high is 86 degrees Tuesday with a 30% chance of an afternoon shower or storm.
