Heat and humidity will stick with North Georgia for the last day of May, and they aren’t going anywhere for the start of June, either.

It won’t be until this weekend the region gets a break from the muggy conditions, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. But that high humidity will come with a strong dose of sunshine Tuesday, he said.

“Partly to mostly sunny, and not much rain today,” Monahan said. “This afternoon, we could start to see some showers pop up here and there. They will be slow-moving where they develop, so some heavy rain is possible in a few neighborhoods — just not going to be a whole lot.”

Monahan is calling for a 20% chance of showers across North Georgia on Tuesday. He expects 11 hours of the day to be sunny as temperatures climb from the upper 60s into the upper 80s. Atlanta’s projected high is 89 degrees.

Before the sunshine gets going Tuesday, some patchy fog is possible and could impact visibility during the morning commute. Fog should be heaviest south of Atlanta, especially along I-85, Monahan said.

Wednesday should see the same mix of sun, clouds and stray showers, according to Monahan. Temperatures on Wednesday could break into the 90s before a cold front approaches Thursday, bringing with it a better chance of rain, he said.

“We get some more clouds and a little better chance of a shower or storm later on Thursday and during the early part of the day on Friday,” he said. Rain chances Thursday are 40%, he said.

Temperatures should take a step back on Friday with a projected high of 86 degrees, and mid-80s are in store this weekend, according to the latest forecast. Rain will be a possibility each day this week, but the humidity will come down, Monahan said.

“As this weekend cold front comes in, after the showers on Thursday, we’re going to knock that humidity down, push that mugginess to the south,” he said. “At the same time, a possible tropical system develops across the Southeast.”

The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins Wednesday, and forecasters are calling for above-average storm activity for the seventh straight year.
