Get used to the cloud cover and increased rain chances, because they aren’t going anywhere the next few days, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan.
A cold front is stalled to the south of metro Atlanta, and it’s sending clouds and humidity this way, Monahan said. As a result, the region will stay muggy Thursday, Friday and into the weekend, and there is moderate chance of rain at any time.
For Thursday, Monahan said the rain chance is running at 30% for the morning drive and will increase to 40% this afternoon.
“Most of North Georgia is off to a dry start this morning with a lot of clouds, and watch out for some patchy fog, too,” he said. “By 1 p.m., we get a little bit of heating, we’re gonna get a little bit of sunshine this afternoon, and scattered storms will develop.”
The afternoon storms will be slow-moving, he said. This morning, showers are dotting the northeast, and roads in the northern Atlanta suburbs could be slick in spots.
Temperatures are starting the day comfortable in the upper 60s and low 70s and should top out in the low 80s this afternoon, according to Channel 2. Atlanta typically records highs in the 90s this time of year.
Monahan is expecting showers to stick around overnight, setting up Friday to be another wet day. The rain chance increases to 60% to end the work week, Monahan said.
“This front is not going anywhere. It’s just sitting across North Georgia, and that’s going to mean more clouds and more rain as we go through Friday,” he said. “We’ll start Friday morning wet, and I think we’ll see some more widespread rain and storms Friday afternoon.”
The increased showers and cloud cover will also mean cooler weather, as temperatures Friday are not expected to leave the 70s. It won’t be all rain, all the time, and Monahan said Saturday will be a slightly drier day with showers and storms 40% likely.
“A little more sun for the weekend, with highs in the mid-80s Saturday and Sunday,” he said.
