[UPDATE 1 P.M.]: A flash flood warning is in place for parts of Henry, Rockdale, Butts, Jasper and Newton counties until 6:15 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Harris, Troup and Meriwether counties are also under a warning until 6:45 p.m.

Rain has already been impacting the areas, but an additional 1 to 2 inches may bring in more flooding and dangerous road conditions. Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads.

[ORIGINAL STORY]: The intense heat of the week is expected to continue Saturday, but a cold front arriving in the evening should bring widespread rain and a drop from recent extreme temperatures.

The day will start warm thanks to “balmy” overnight lows in the mid-70s, Channel 2 Action News Chief Meteorologist Glenn Burns said. The high temperature Saturday is likely to hit 90 degrees, but humidity will raise the heat index significantly higher, following the trend seen all week long in metro Atlanta.

“Lots of water, take frequent breaks — you know the drill,” Burns said.

Pop-up summer thunderstorms may hit some in the metro area through the middle of the day, but those showers should be short-lived, according to Burns. More intense rain and slightly lower temperatures are expected to arrive just before sundown.

“We have an approaching cold front that will generate widespread showers and storms for your Saturday night,” Burns said.

Overnight rains are expected to last well into the night but should break into scattered storms by Sunday, according to Channel 2. The temperature Sunday is expected to top out at 84 degrees, a welcome downturn after more than a week of oppressive heat.

Scattered storms should stick around for the beginning of the work week, Burns said, and temperatures will creep back up toward 90 degrees as the week marches on.

Saturday’s predicted storms should not affect the Atlanta Braves, who play the Washington Nationals in game two of a three-game series at 4:10 p.m. at Truist Park. Fans attending the Atlanta United game against Austin FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium should check traffic before the match begins at 7 p.m., about the same time storms are expected to hit town.

After a week of oppressive heat, temperatures Sunday are expected to top out at 84 degrees.
