North Georgia can look forward to a big swing in temperatures later this week, with highs in the 70s just around the corner, according to Channel 2 Action News.

On Monday morning, however, it’s just cold. Temperatures in the 30s and 40s are exacerbated by a cool breeze, which is making it feel more like freezing in metro Atlanta.

“We start with the heavy coat at the beginning of the week and the light coat or no coat by the end of the week,” Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said. “It’s going to get nice and warm as the week goes on, but this morning it’s chilly.”

Temperatures are headed for a projected high of 53 degrees in Atlanta, which is slightly below average for this time of year. Monahan said there should be less wind this afternoon, and the city will stay dry.

“It’s going to be a chilly start but a mostly sunny afternoon, and we’re going to keep that sunshine going all the way through the week,” he said. “And eventually its going to carry our temperatures up toward 70 degrees.”

The warming trend starts Tuesday with highs in the low 60s, according to Monahan. By Thursday, Atlanta should hit the 70s, he said, and warmer weather will carry into the weekend.

The projected high is 53 degrees.

With thousands returning to work and school Monday after the Thanksgiving holiday, the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center expects a big uptick in volume on the interstates. There are already delays in Douglas County after a tractor-trailer overturned at the start of the morning commute.

Multiple lanes are blocked on I-20 East before Thornton Road while authorities are on the scene.

“Watch for these delays to grow making your way from Douglasville through Lithia Springs,” traffic reporter Mike Shields said. “Use U.S. 78 as an alternate.”
