North Georgia is looking at a mostly dry day on Monday with high humidity and afternoon temperatures near 90 degrees.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan is not expecting much in the way of rain, with only a 20% chance of a shower or storm. The mountains are most likely to see rain Monday, he said, while only pop-up showers are expected around metro Atlanta as the region stays partly cloudy.

“How about a bit of sunshine?” Monahan said. “A little bit of rain today, but not a ton of rain. A lot like we saw over the weekend, rain will be isolated as we go through this afternoon.”

With the high humidity, some patchy fog is possible Monday morning. Atlanta is expected to reach 90 degrees this afternoon, and 90s are in the forecast most of this week. Monahan said the city has already recorded more than the average number of 90-degree days in a typical year.

Heat and humidity will stick around Tuesday, but rain chances will increase. Monahan is calling for a 40% chance of shower or storm development Tuesday as a cold front moves in.

This week won’t be as wet as the last one, he said.

“Dry air, here it comes,” he said. “Tuesday night, Wednesday, and into Thursday morning, it’s still going to be hot, but the air is going to be dry. That’s going to mean low chances for rain and lower humidity. It should feel a little bit better for Wednesday and for Thursday.”

Rain chances will come up again for the end of the week, according to the latest forecast. Otherwise, Monahan said the weather locally is looking pretty quiet, but there is a chance for more activity in the tropics.

There are three areas with the potential to develop into a storm in the Atlantic Ocean, including one with an 80% chance of development, he said. It would be the first named storm since July Fourth weekend, when Tropical Storm Colin formed off the coast of the Carolinas.

“We are in our third-longest streak within a season without a named storm in the tropical Atlantic,” he said. “Fifty-seven days since the last time we had a tropical storm.”

The longest streak is 61 days. Monahan said forecasters are expecting tropical activity to ramp up headed into the peak of hurricane season in September.

Atlanta's projected high is 90 degrees Monday with a 20% chance of a shower or storm.
