Temperatures on Friday will run nearly 10 degrees above average for yet another warm day in North Georgia.

Highs in the 80s don’t exactly mesh with pastimes like pumpkin picking, hayrides and evening bonfires, but Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Jennifer Lopez said those looking to combine their autumn activities with cooler weather won’t have to wait much longer.

Crisp fall air is arriving this weekend, she said.

“Plenty of sunshine, dropping temperatures and a lot of wind,” Lopez said of the weekend forecast. With lows in the 40s Sunday morning and a Sunday afternoon high of only 69 degrees, “fall has definitely arrived,” she said.

The big change in temperature is arriving on the heels of a cold front, which is forecast to bring rain to North Georgia on Saturday. Ahead of it, Lopez said the region will stay dry and partly cloudy Friday. The projected high for Atlanta is a “toasty” 84 degrees, she said.

Lopez said temperatures won’t move much Friday evening for those looking to take in a football game. She expects numbers in the mid-70s by kickoff and low 70s around halftime. Before the front moves in Saturday morning, temperatures will be in the low 60s, according to Channel 2.

“That front doesn’t have a ton of rain to work with, so we’ll just see some scattered showers early Saturday morning,” Lopez said. “Rain chances at 30%. This front quickly pushes south of Atlanta by the afternoon, that means more sunshine will be moving in and a drop in our temperatures.”

Once the front moves away, Lopez expects North Georgia to turn breezy and cooler with a projected high of 68 degrees Saturday. She said temperatures will drop into the 50s by the time the first pitch is thrown Saturday night for Game 1 of the Braves’ National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

It will be chilly and windy enough at Truist Park to warrant some extra layers, Lopez said.

“We see the cool weather continue into Monday and Tuesday as temperatures will be in the 40s and the 70s,” she said.

There may be lots to look forward to this weekend, but the Friday morning drive has an outlook much less pleasant. An early crash has shut down all westbound lanes of I-20 in Conyers, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

The lanes are blocked at Salem Road at 6:45 a.m., but the ramps to and from Salem are still open, the Traffic Center reported.

Eastside commuters can take Almon Road to Dogwood Road to get back onto I-20 at Ga. 138 without delay, traffic reporter Doug Turnball said. The Dogwood access road is “wide open,” he said.
