A cold front moving through North Georgia on Friday could be responsible for a shower or two during the morning hours.

The front’s primary impact, however, will be a big shift in temperatures, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. After Thursday’s high of 78, which fell just shy of a record, Atlanta is only expected to reach the 60s Friday. It will do so with some sunshine, Monahan said.

“We’ll finish the day with temperatures in the low 60s to a few mid-60s,” Monahan said. “It gets chilly tonight. Get ready for cold temperatures. We’re going to wake up with 30s and 40s tomorrow morning — that is going to be a big change.”

Atlanta is starting Friday warm with temperatures in the low 60s. Monahan expects numbers to dip into the 50s as the cold front moves through midmorning, and they will rise again as sunshine increases for the afternoon.

Atlanta's projected high is 66 degrees Friday once showers move out and sunshine moves in, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Scattered showers falling across northwest Georgia before sunrise will eventually make their way into the city, he said.

“Yes, there’s going to be an impact from the rain for your morning drive, but it’s going to be a low one,” Monahan said. “Also at lunchtime as well, mainly north of I-20. A little line of showers comes through. We should be dry, though, this afternoon and dry for your evening.”

Monahan said the weather looks good for any Friday evening plans, and the same is true of Saturday. After a cold start Saturday morning, temperatures are expected to rise into the low 60s. Rain returns Sunday, and the chance of a shower is high at 80%, according to Channel 2.

“You wanna get caught up on TV? Sunday is going to be your day to do that,” Monahan said. “It’s going to be a little wet, a little chilly, a little more like February.”

With an 80% chance of showers in Sunday's forecast, Saturday will be the best day for outdoor plans this weekend, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan.

As showers move in Friday, metro Atlanta interstates are moving at the speed limit everywhere but in Cobb County, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. A crash investigation on I-285 South has multiple lanes closed at Cobb Parkway.

Only a right lane is open at times, the Traffic Center reported before daybreak.

“You want to take I-75 South into downtown,” traffic reporter Mike Shields said. “This will save you a few minutes.”
