With highs in the 90s and a chance of afternoon thunderstorms, Friday will certainly feel like summer in North Georgia even as some school districts head back to class.
Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said the region is at the hottest point of the year, with an average high of about 90 degrees. Over the next several weeks, the average high will start to tick down, and by Oct. 1 temperatures in the low 80s are typical.
That’s still 64 days away.
“We are still in the thick of summertime, back-to-school or not,” Monahan said. “It’s going to be hot and humid today. Ninety-three in Athens, 91 in Atlanta and a little cooler in the mountains. That’s where we’re going to see a little better chance of rain earlier in the day.”
For metro Atlanta, the chance of a morning shower is less than 10% as Friday starts off warm in the mid-70s. Monahan said it is a good idea to send kids to the bus stop with an umbrella, as scattered storms will be 40% likely this afternoon.
Rain is possible anywhere after lunchtime, but Monahan is expecting to see more activity north of I-20. The rain chance increases to 70% Saturday for what should be the wettest day of the weekend.
“We’ve got scattered storms but there are going to be a lot of dry areas too, so no day is a washout over the next several few,” he said. “Saturday, my advice is get out early. By the afternoon, showers and storms will be pretty widespread.”

Sunday will be slightly drier, but there is still a 60% chance of a shower or storm, according to the latest forecast. Monahan is expecting rainfall amounts north of Atlanta up to an inch and up to a half-inch of accumulation for the city by the end of the weekend.
Northernmost areas of the state could get up to 2 inches of rainfall, he said.
“Mountains, northside of the metro are where we should see the most rain for the weekend,” he said. “Temperatures are slightly less hot for the weekend, in the low 90s with that rain.”
