The month of August has certainly been a soggy one, with Atlanta recording about double the amount of rain than what is considered average.

Rain in the forecast Friday will add to those totals, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. There are fewer showers and storms to worry about Friday, but there is still a 40% chance rain to interrupt outdoor plans this afternoon.

A few showers are falling for the Friday morning drive, but it is mostly light stuff to start the day.

“Would you like a little more sunshine for your weekend?” Monahan said. “I think we’re going to see that over the next couple of days as the gulf moisture we’ve been stuck with really for the last couple of weeks starts to move a little farther away.”

As the moisture moves out and allows drier air to move in, North Georgia could be looking at a bit more blue sky and less rain over the weekend, he said.

On Friday, North Georgia can look forward to a partly cloudy sky this afternoon. Monahan said areas that aren’t getting wet this morning are starting the day with lots of cloud cover, high humidity and a light wind, adding up to some areas of patchy fog.

“It’s not everybody in the fog, but here and there you could run into some patchy dense fog,” he said. “Remember: Put the beams on low, increase that following distance just a bit before the sun comes up early this morning.”

The predawn showers have the potential to slow down the Friday morning commute, but Monahan does not expect the weather to add more than a few minutes to drive times. Scattered, slow-moving showers and storms are expected to fire up by 5 p.m., just in time for the drive home.

“Plenty of sunshine between those, though, and that’s going to mean a warmer afternoon for us today,” he said.

Atlanta’s projected high is 86 degrees, which is just slightly below average for this time of year. The city should return to average or even above-average temperatures this weekend, according to Monahan.

“We’re going to start start dry early on your Saturday, and then by the afternoon partly cloudy, but also some slow-moving downpours as well,” he said. “We’ll mix in some sunshine along with those scattered storms for tomorrow.”

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said there is a 40% chance of an afternoon shower Saturday, but there will be plenty of sunshine, too.
