A driver was killed in a wreck that shut down the northbound lanes of the Downtown Connector and caused hours of delays Friday morning in Atlanta.

Atlanta police responded to the single-vehicle wreck near 10th Street shortly after 5:30 a.m. and found the driver dead at the scene. The lanes were shut down until the investigation cleared about 8:45 a.m., causing massive delays through Midtown for the entire Friday morning commute.

At the height of the gridlock, backups stretched past I-20. The trip from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport into Midtown was clocking in at over an hour, and commuters crowded onto Northside Drive, Moreland Avenue and I-285 to avoid the delays.
