A pedestrian was hit and killed early Tuesday morning while trying to cross I-85 in south Fulton County, authorities said.

The victim was struck by multiple vehicles about 3:50 a.m. near Old National Highway, according to the Georgia State Patrol. Authorities shut down the northbound lanes for several hours while they investigated, diverting traffic onto I-285 and causing major delays leaving Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

According to the state patrol, the pedestrian was “attempting to cross the interstate” before being hit by a northbound Kia Optima.

“After the initial impact, the pedestrian was struck by other passing vehicles that did not remain on scene,” GSP spokesperson Konswello Monroe said in an email. “The pedestrian suffered fatal injuries.”

The pedestrian is not being identified until their family has been notified, Monroe said.

All northbound lanes of I-85 were reopened about 6 a.m. when crash investigators left the scene. The deadly incident remains under investigation, and charges have not been determined, according to the state patrol.
