A pedestrian was rushed to a hospital in critical condition after walking into traffic Tuesday morning on I-75, authorities said.

The victim, who was not identified, was hit shortly after 8 a.m. in the southbound lanes near Windy Hill Road, according to the Georgia State Patrol. Authorities temporarily shut down multiple lanes to clear the wreck, resulting in gridlock conditions through Cobb County at the peak of the morning commute.

According to the state patrol, the pedestrian left the west shoulder and walked into the path of a Chrysler 200. The pedestrian was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, where they were listed in critical condition Tuesday.

The incident remains under investigation. It was not clear if the driver of the Chrysler, who was not injured, would face charges.
