Agency picks Georgia State for Turner Field redevelopment

The winning bidders — i.e. the expected buyers — of Turner Field are now official.

On Monday, the government authority that owns The Ted made official what has long been deemed inevitable: choosing the plan that would convert the stadium into an arena for Georgia State Panthers football and create a new mixed-use community south of I-20.

The area has been in limbo since the Braves announced in late 2013 their plans to leave downtown for a new ballpark in Cobb County. Georgia State and a development team led by Atlanta real estate firm Carter have been the most visible would-be buyers. Two little-known groups also bid, and casinos have been rumored.

There's still a lot of work to be done before a deal is final, and many details still haven't been disclosed.

The Atlanta Fulton County Recreation Authority says a final deal will likely be reached in 30 days. And The Atlanta Journal-Constitution will continue to dig in the days and weeks ahead to learn more about the the development plans for the 67-acre site.
