The Atlanta-based Weather Co. has announced a deal to sell its data-crunching technology to IBM for an undisclosed amount.

The Weather Co. will retain its flagship Weather Channel, officials said today.

However, the lucrative and growing business of selling weather information and analysis to companies and government will be folded into Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM.

The 33-year-old Weather Co. has roughly 1,400 employees, about 900 of them in metro Atlanta.

The deal with IBM, to be consummated early next year, will transfer about 950 of those employees to IBM, although it is unclear now whether they will have to actually move at all.

Most of the company’s Weather Channel employees are here in Atlanta. However, many of the tech-centric operations are elsewhere, including San Francisco, Massachusetts and Wisconsin.

IBM and the Weather Co. announced a strategic partnership around the data technology earlier this year.
