Pat Allen gives Bulldogs something to cheer about

Pat Allen’s coach at Frankin High School Reisertown, Md., laughed when asked if his prize offensive tackle has been monitoring the recruiting drama at Georgia.
“I don’t think he was paying attention to any of that stuff,” Anthony Burgos said with a chuckle. “I don’t know if he kept up with what everybody else is doing.”
Allen has been a little busy. The 6-foot-5, 286-pound lineman has been in various stages of planning the rest of his life the last couple of weeks. He has solidified one thing on Wednesday, signing with the Georgia Bulldogs rather than the Florida Gators or Penn State.
Earlier this week, he took a job at Giant Food Store and began work on Tuesday as a stock clerk.
“Talking about great character, he actually just started a new job,” said Burgos, who has won back-to-back state championships with Allen as his left tackle. “A lot of kids would just be enjoying the moment. This kid just started working a new job and is trying to help his parents out. He’s just a hard-working kid who loves his family and wants to do whatever he can to help them.”
Burgos believes Allen is going to help the Bulldogs as well. He believes the 4-star prospect projects as a left tackle in the SEC.
“Because of his skill set and his athleticism, he’s prime and ready to be a left tackle,” Burgos said. “Now Georgia will probably want to get him in their strength and conditioning program and get a little more weight on him. But he’s just so athletic, I think he’s going to be a left tackle.
“He’s going to be a good one for Georgia.”
I’m supposed to be talking to Allen a little later. In the meantime, here’s more about his recruitment from Coach Burgos:
On Allen backing off original commitment to Georgia …
“When (Mike Bobo and Will Friend) took the job at Colorado State, he just wanted to make certain about the guy that was going to coach him. He really had a close connection with Coach Friend. That’s part of the recruiting process and it was going on for a year. So, you know, you build relationships over that year. After that, he had relationships with other coaches at other programs. But at the end of the day he realized that Coach Richt was still there, Coach Ball, who was his recruiting guy, was still there, and that he still wanted to go to Georgia. It was just a matter of meeting the new coaches and figuring out what was best.”
On Bulldogs getting back into it …
“Georgia did a great job of, as soon as they hired Coach (Rob) Sale, getting him up here for a weekly visit. That gave him an opportunity to just be around Pat and try to build a relationship and communicate. It’s still not where it should be, but it’s close enough. He knows Georgia is a good place and he’s pretty confident in Coach Richt. Coach Richt is one of the longest-tenured head coaches in the country, so he’s confident with that. At the end of the day, he always wanted to be a Georgia Bulldog, so that’s where he’s going to go.”
