WEDNESDAY’S WEATHER-TRAFFIC: Storms, showers possible with afternoon heat

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan has your forecast

Wednesday is going to be hot, but showers could cool things down in the afternoon.

“The last couple of days have been dry,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said. “Today, we bring that chance of rain back into the forecast.”

The morning won’t break from the week’s trend too much. It will start off dry, with plenty of sunshine, according to the latest forecast.

“The change today is going to be a little less sun for the afternoon and little better chance for storms,” Monahan said. “So instead of that full 14 hours of sunshine through our daylight hours, we get 11 today, 11 Thursday and 12 Friday.”

Wednesday’s projected high is 92 degrees, down from Tuesday’s high of 93.

“You’re barely going to notice the difference,” Monahan said.

When you factor in humidity, it’ll feel even hotter, according to Channel 2. The heat index will be closer to 100 degrees.

“That means your body can’t cool itself as efficiently as it could on a dry afternoon,” Monahan said.

In areas south of metro Atlanta, including Eatonton and Griffin, it will feel more like 97 degrees.

The good news it that pop-up showers are on the way. The moisture in the air raises the chance of rain to 30% by the afternoon, Monahan said.

“We’ll kick up a few showers by 1 o’clock today,” he said. “And then as we move toward mid- to late afternoon, be weather-aware. We will see a few storms pop up with the heating of the afternoon and these will fade away toward sunset.”

By 8 p.m., things should be mainly dry across North Georgia, according to Channel 2.

It's an easy ride through most of metro Atlanta, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

Drivers in DeKalb County should expect delays on Candler Road over I-20, the Traffic Center reported. A crash involving an ambulance has two lanes blocked.
