Heavy showers continue to douse the northeast corner of the state, but Atlanta still remains mostly dry, according to Channel 2 Action News.

While that means metro Atlanta pavement isn't slick, a few wrecks are keeping the roads messy Wednesday as the evening commute chugs along, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

After being blocked for about two hours, Big Shanty Road reopened at Busbee Parkway in Cobb County, according to the Traffic Center. Nearby surface streets remain slow.

Crashes on the Perimeter and the Downtown Connector have been cleared, but both interstates remain slow as a result, according to the Traffic Center.

All the clouds in the sky are an omen of things to come, according to Channel 2. After a month of mostly dry weather, Wednesday will flip the script and bring on a wave of wet weather to Georgia.

Rain chances get even higher for the end of the week, according to the latest forecast.

Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said North Georgia could really use the rain.

“I know this is hard to believe since we've been so wet over the last (six months) or so going back to the fall, but we are actually in a drought for parts of North Georgia,” he said. “I think we are going to take care of a lot of that this weekend.”

Monahan said there is a 40 percent chance showers for Atlanta.

With the clouds and showers around, temperatures are forecast to stay below 90 degrees for much of North Georgia. Atlanta should top out at a projected 86 degrees.

Monahan said the rain will move out late Wednesday, but it is expected to return on Thursday with another round of isolated to scattered showers and storms.

“As we head toward tomorrow morning, we'll start in the 60s and 70s,” he said. “And by tomorrow afternoon, we'll be in the 80s again with our storm chance, again, scattered at about 40 percent.”

After Thursday, rain chances really ramp up. Friday has a 70 percent chance of showers and storms, and rain chances are 80 to 90 percent for the weekend, according to Channel 2.

Much of North Georgia could get 2 to 4 inches of rainfall by the end of the weekend, Monahan said. Isolated areas could see even higher amounts.

“There will be some dry times to get some of your outdoor plans in, but overall you've got to plan on a lot of rain,” he said. “Maybe you've been putting off the spring cleaning, whatever you can do inside, a movie you wanted to catch — this is the weekend to do it.”
