The sunshine and clear skies seen in metro Atlanta Wednesday will give way to clouds tonight in advance of a few days of rain.
New Year’s Day temperatures reached the mid-50s and is expected to cool to the low to mid-40s Wednesday night. The metro area should remain mostly dry overnight, with showers moving into the area Thursday afternoon.
“Heavy rainfall will come in waves” Thursday and Friday, with showers lingering into Saturday, said Eboni Deon, Channel 2 Action News meterologist.
Atlanta is expected to pick up between one and two inches of rain over the next few days, Deon said. North Georgia could see between two and three inches. A flood watch for northwest Georgia goes into effect at 1 p.m. Thursday.
The roads remained mostly clear Wednesday evening. In most areas speed limit rides were reported. A crash on Highway 124 in Snellville was tying up travel in the area and drivers were encouraged to use side streets to get around it.
Traffic is expected to return to more normal conditions on Thursday as many people return to work and their regular schedules after the holiday season.
