Warming shelters open around metro Atlanta ahead of arctic blast

Here's Meteorologist Brad Nitz with your forecast. He's tracking changes on Channel 2 Action News Nightbeat at 11 p.m.

Warming shelters opened Tuesday across metro Atlanta as an arctic front swept over north Georgia.

No snow or rain is expected Wednesday, but temperatures will plunge into the mid-20s, said Channel 2 Action News meteorologists.

North Georgia was placed under a wind advisory at 7 p.m. Tuesday. That adds to the freeze warning in effect for metro Atlanta, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Wind gusts up to 30 mph were recorded Tuesday before the advisory kicked in, Channel 2’s Brian Monahan said.

The forecast will remain cold through the rest of the week, with lows in the 30s and highs in the 40s and low 50s. There is a possibility of showers Thursday and Friday but no snow is expected, according to Channel 2.

For those who have no place to go for warmth, various warming shelters will be opening in the metro area, including some in Atlanta.

Atlanta

The City of Atlanta’s warming center will open 6 p.m. Tuesday and will remain open through 9 a.m. Thursday, the city announced. The center is located at Old Adamsville Recreation Center at 3404 Delmar Lane in northwest Atlanta.

Transportation to the warming center will be provided starting at 5 p.m. at Gateway on 275 Pryor Street in southwest Atlanta. The warming center is open to the public.

DeKalb

DeKalb County plans to open two warming centers for residents to use overnight as temperatures drop below freezing, officials said Tuesday.

The centers will open at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The closing date and time has not yet been determined:

Residents can also visit First United Methodist Church of Tucker at 5095 LaVista Road starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The church is opening as a “no-freeze shelter” to provide food and a place to shower and sleep.

DeKalb officials encouraged residents to bring pets inside, use alternative heat sources safely and disconnect outdoor hoses.

Residents can also sign up for DeKalb's emergency notification system, CodeRED, by visiting www.dekalbcountyga.gov and clicking the CodeRED logo at the bottom of the page.

Cobb

Cobb will not open warming shelters of their own but has partnered with MUST Ministries’ Loaves and Fishes Community Kitchen to provide shelter to primarily women and children.

The shelter will open Tuesday at 8 p.m. on 55 Elizabeth Church Road, Marietta. Men will be referred to a nearby extension, Cobb spokesman Ross Cavitt said.

A closing date has not been announced.

Dinner will be available starting at 6:30 p.m. for women and children at the shelter. Breakfast will also be served Wednesday morning, Cavitt said. Clothing, job coaching, and other resources will also be available for those in need.

Douglas County

Douglas County announced it will open a warming shelter Tuesday night only.

The First United Methodist Church shelter will open at 7 p.m. and stay open until 8 a.m. Wednesday, officials said.

The shelter is located at 6167 Prestley Mill Rd, Douglasville.

Gwinnett and Fulton

Gwinnett and Fulton County officials contacted Tuesday said no warming centers will be open Tuesday night.
