North Georgia is in the middle of an on-again, off-again pattern with its wet weather.
After a rainy start to Monday, Tuesday is looking dry and sunny, according to Channel 2 Action News. More rain is in the forecast Wednesday and again on Friday, with times of sunshine in between.
“Every other day pretty much through the rest of the week, one day has sunshine, the next day has showers,” Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said. “We're on a seesaw here.”
While there is plenty of sunshine on the way Tuesday, it may be difficult to see for much of the morning. Spotty areas of dense fog are blanketing North Georgia.
The low cloud cover could impact visibility for the ride into work and school, Monahan said. But past sunrise, when the clouds are typically thickest, the fog should start to burn off.
“Once it goes away, off to the races,” he said. “We’ll have temperatures quickly warming up. Lots of sunshine.”
Tuesday is also starting out chilly. Temperatures are in the 30s across North Georgia, and some areas on the Westside are near freezing. Monahan said it’s a marked difference from Monday’s start in the mid-40s.
“You'll want that heavier coat to start the day,” he said. “It is a bit cooler.”
Thick outerwear will not be necessary past 10 a.m., however, as the sun comes out from behind the fog. By lunchtime, temperatures should be in the low 50s, according to Channel 2.
Average highs for this time of year are in the low 50s, and Monahan said metro Atlanta will be warmer than that for much of the afternoon. Tuesday’s projected high is 56 degrees.
The wet weather is on again Wednesday. North Georgia will stay dry overnight Tuesday even as clouds thicken up, then lighter showers begin to build in later in the day Wednesday, Monahan said.
“Some pretty light stuff will fall across the area, but plan on some wet weather moving in Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night,” he said.
Wednesday’s rain chance is 30%, and after another dry day Thursday, Friday’s chance at showers is 40%, according to the latest forecast. Into early Saturday morning, North Georgia is looking a little wet.
“By the weekend, showers (are) clearing on out,” Monahan said. “Sunday is looking great with highs near 60.”
Despite a few early morning crashes, the Tuesday morning commute is still moving pretty smoothly, the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center reported at 6 a.m.
A crash on Veterans Memorial Highway could cause some delays through Douglas County. Authorities are blocking a right eastbound lane at Thornton Road, according to the Traffic Center.
There also could be some extra congestion downtown later Tuesday, when an expo gets underway at the Georgia World Congress Center on Andrew Young International Boulevard. The International Production and Processing Expo is in town through Jan. 30, the Traffic Center reported.
