Atlanta hit a toasty 93 degrees Tuesday afternoon, which makes for a slightly warmer-than-average summertime day.

Too bad it’s the second week of fall.

Atlanta surpassed the previous record of 89 degrees, according to Channel 2 Action News, toppling yet another mark as the city continues to pile up 90-plus-degree days.

Atlanta typically reaches the 90-degree mark 37 days a year, but Tuesday was the 88th day this year of temperatures in the 90s, according to Channel 2.

If the forecast holds true, Atlanta will break the record of 90 days in the 90s on Friday, Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said. That mark was set in 2011.

Activity on the roads has also heated up Tuesday, especially in DeKalb and Fulton counties, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

Only a left lane of I-285 South is open after a crash near Northlake Parkway, the Traffic Center reported.

Two left lanes of I-20 East are blocked by a crash at Lowery Boulevard, according to the Traffic Center.

In Gwinnett County, a left lane of I-85 North is blocked just before Ga. 317, according to the Traffic Center.

The average temperature this time of year is 77 degrees, Monahan said. The metro Atlanta area hit that mark before the sun came up Tuesday, and the predicted high of 92 was surpassed by a degree earlier in the afternoon. The temperature has since dropped to 92.

“It’s going to feel exactly like September ended, and that’s hot,” Monahan said.

The best chance of rain is in the northeast Georgia mountains, Monahan said. In metro Atlanta, there is no chance of rain.

“In a deepening drought, we can use every drop of rain we can get,” Monahan said.

Temperatures will return to the high 90s Wednesday and Thursday, Monahan said. Thursday could be the hottest October day on record with an expected high of 97.

Sweater weather, however, is on the way, Monahan said. Temps are expected to drop a little by the weekend, with highs hovering in the low 80s.
