Another day, another broken record.
In the past eight days, Atlanta has tied or broken record-high temperatures five times, according to Channel 2 Action News. When the city hit 98 degrees Tuesday afternoon, it toppled the previous record set in 1927.
There is relief to come, and the same can be said for drivers at the moment. Traffic is backed up in several places as the evening commute approaches its end, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
Ga. 400 is recovering from a crash that blocked a right southbound lane at Abernathy Road, the Traffic Center reported. The lane has reopened, but delays span to the Perimeter.
I-20 West is also enduring delays after a crash blocked a left lane near Langhorn Street, the Traffic Center reported.
A gas leak is also affecting Cobb County. South Cobb Drive is blocked between Ridgecrest and Concord roads.
A weather system pushing through North Georgia is expected to cool things off significantly in the next few days, Channel 2 meteorologist Eboni Deon said.
“We are going to see a nice break Thursday and Friday,” she said. “If you like it a little bit cooler, those are your days to plan some outdoor activities.”
After Tuesday’s stint in the 90s and Wednesday’s projected high of 88 degrees, temps in Atlanta are forecast to reach just 82 degrees Thursday and 83 Friday. It will certainly be cooler than in recent weeks, but Deon said those numbers are actually about average for this time of year.

That’s not to say North Georgia is done with 90-degree temperatures completely.
“Temperatures start to rev back up as we get into (this) weekend,” she said.
Deon said an isolated shower or storm is still 10% likely Tuesday.
“Most of the day we'll remain on the quiet and dry side,” she said. “However, a passing shower can’t be ruled out because we are dealing with a frontal boundary that’s going to be moving through.”
Behind the front, North Georgia should feel a cool push of air as winds shift to a north-northeasterly direction. Temperatures are forecast to dip into the 50s and 60s during the morning hours Thursday and Friday, according to Channel 2.
“Later this week, that is what you have to look forward to,” Deon said. “For today, the story remains the same.”
