A summer-like weather pattern is expected to continue Sunday in metro Atlanta, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.
Morning sun should give way to afternoon storms, perhaps some that could bring high winds, he said. So keep your umbrellas and raincoats handy.
The rain could “sit over one neighborhood for a long time,” Monahan said Sunday morning.
“Go ahead with your outdoor plans, just be weather aware.”
However, Monahan said the storms “will have the potential, when they pick up the wind gusts, to bring down some trees.”
The expected high Sunday is 90 degrees, and highs for the rest of the week are similar. The temp at noon Sunday should be at 86.
“What happens is you get these storms sitting over one area and as they collapse, a lot of cool air above the ground sinks towards the ground and spreads out,” Monahan said. “It could bring some trees down.”
This weather pattern isn’t expected to change anytime soon due to an area of low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico that is pumping tropical moisture into Georgia, Monahan said.
The other thing that isn’t changing much is the water level of Lake Lanier. It might be about a foot lower than it was last week, but Monahan said it’s still 2.5 feet above full pool. Be careful and safe on the water, stay away from parks and beaches that are closed, and avoid the fast-moving Chattahoochee River for the time being.
The severe weather also causes a headache for drivers caught in the pop-up storms.
I-285 near Jonesboro Road in Fulton County saw a lot of traffic Saturday due to four left lanes being under construction, but no such lane repairs are planned for Sunday on or within the Perimeter, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation’s traffic report.
