SATURDAY’S WEATHER-TRAFFIC: North Georgia to experience ‘mid-June’ temperatures this weekend

Last weekend, Georgia temperatures dipped about 15 degrees below seasonal norms.

This weekend will be the complete opposite, with metro Atlanta predicted to be several degrees warmer than average on Saturday and Sunday.

“We’re heading right to mid-June,” Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said.

Morning temperatures won’t be out of step with seasonal averages, Burns said. Saturday’s morning low in Atlanta was 62 degrees, and temperatures will be fairly uniform across North Georgia.

“We’re going to have an easterly wind and morning cloud cover, which will help create a fairly uniform temperature pattern,” Burns said.

Nearly the entire state should hit the 80s this afternoon, with Atlanta projected to reach 85 degrees, according to the latest forecast. That’s 5 degrees warmer than average for this time of year and 6 degrees shy of the record, which is 91.

“If you like it hot, you’re going to enjoy this weekend thoroughly,” Channel 2 meteorologist Eboni Deon said.

With no chance of rain, construction crews will be unimpeded Saturday. The Georgia Department of Transportation has plenty of ongoing projects to take advantage of the weather.

From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, there will be rolling closures on I-285 West at Ashford Dunwoody Road, GDOT said. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., rolling closures will also affect drivers on I-285 South at I-20 in DeKalb County.

A right northbound lane of I-75 will also be blocked at Deering Road from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., GDOT said. In addition, the I-20 East exit ramp to Riverside Parkway will closed during that time span.

Sunday will be a little warmer than Saturday, but a slight chance of rain re-enters the forecast, Burns said. Atlanta has a 20% chance of a pop-up shower the second half of the weekend.

The chance of rain chance increases Monday to 80% in Atlanta as a cold front enters Georgia, dropping temperatures back into the mid-70s over the following days.
