Atlanta has broken 90 degrees for 12 days in a row, but Saturday should put an end to it.
That doesn’t mean North Georgia will return to normal September temperatures, however, because this hasn’t been a normal September, Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said.
Since Monday, Atlanta has either broken, tied or been one degree shy of record-high temperatures, making this one of the hottest Septembers on record. A cold front in the Carolinas should cool off North Georgia and introduce some rain this weekend, however.
“The front is never going to make it in (Georgia), but it should provide enough cloud cover and shower activity to put our high temperatures back in the upper 80s,” Burns said.
Saturday morning will be dry, but the cold front will near North Georgia about noon, leading to a 40% chance of afternoon showers, Channel 2 meteorologist Eboni Deon said. The North Georgia mountains should see the bulk of the rain, but metro Atlanta could see some pop-up showers as well.
“It’s after 2 p.m. when we’ll start to see that opportunity for showers and storms to get going,” Deon said.
The rain isn't expected to affect the many college football games going on near Atlanta on Saturday. In fact, Georgia Tech police are warning attendees to make sure they stay hydrated, since Atlanta should still hit 88 degrees during the match against The Citadel. The game kicks off at 12:30 p.m.
