SATURDAY’S WEATHER-TRAFFIC: After foggy morning, Peach Bowl events to clutter downtown Atlanta

North Georgia will have a cloudy start Saturday morning.

Downtown Atlanta will be abuzz Saturday as hopeful Sooners and Tigers fans flock to Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and its many festivities.

As a result, activity on nearby surface streets will be cluttered with traffic. The bowl game’s accompanying parade starts at 9 a.m. and will block several streets until about 10:30 a.m., Atlanta police said in a tweet.

Rideshare services and MARTA will also be heavily used throughout the day, especially just before the 4 p.m. game between LSU and Oklahoma. Even when the game finishes, the World Lightweight Championship boxing match at State Farm Arena at 9 p.m. will likely keep the area congested.

While downtown will be hot with all the activities, Saturday’s weather should be pretty warm as well.

An expected high of 66 means Atlanta will be nearly 15 degrees warmer than average for this time of year, Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said.

“It’s going to be very warm due to the cloud cover,” he said. “As we go into the lunch hour, there will be a few breaks in the clouds, a little bit of sunshine and temperatures are going to soar in response to that sunshine.

At 6 p.m., the clouds will thicken back up, with a few showers popping up in the south metro Atlanta counties, Burns said. There’s a 20% chance of rain in Atlanta, as those spotty showers move north this evening

On Sunday, the rain chance shoots up to 80% as a cold front moves east into the state.

“The rain will become a little more widespread into Sunday evening ... and here comes the cold front which is going to drive in even more rain and possibly a thunderstorm,” Burns said.

Most of metro Atlanta will see up to half an inch of rain, while some areas of North Fulton, Cobb and Gwinnett could see up to an inch, according to Channel 2.

The rain should finish up Monday ahead of a dry couple of days, meaning temperatures will also slowly return back to the mid-50s.
