Monday will be a transition day for North Georgia weather, according to Channel 2 Action News.

After a good drenching Sunday, some lighter rain will stick around through the day Monday. The wet weather will eventually come to an end ahead of “some really nice conditions” for Christmas Eve, Channel 2 meteorologist Eboni Deon said.

“Yesterday we had a wall of water just move in across the area,” she said. “That area of low pressure is making its way eastward, and it’s going to be making its way off the Southeast coast later tonight.”

Once it does, Deon said North Georgia will be done with the rain.

Light showers and drizzle continue to fall across most of North Georgia, and a flood watch remains in effect through Tuesday morning. In addition to the more than two inches of rainfall some areas received Sunday, as much as two more inches could fall Monday, according to Channel 2.

Some roads are flooded and impassable. In northwest Atlanta, authorities blocked off Harwell Road with caution tape for several hours Monday morning, but multiple vehicles tried to bypass the roadblock, according to Channel 2.

Before the road reopened at noon, one vehicle stalled in the floodwater. Its occupants were forced to continue on foot, the news station reported.

“Do not cross roads covered in water,” Deon said on Twitter. “It is not worth the risk. You could encounter more roads like this around the metro.”

Flooding has also closed Chamblee Dunwoody Road between New Peachtree Road and American Industrial Way, according to Channel 2.

Windshield wipers will be necessary on and off, Deon said.

“We're going to catch some breaks from time to time, but that chance of rain is going to stick around through the afternoon, even through the early evening hours,” she said. “There is still that possibility for a few isolated hit-or-miss rain showers as we go through the day.”

A wind advisory for North Georgia expired at 7 a.m., but Deon said wind will continue to be a factor. The breeze has just fallen below advisory criteria, she said.

Temperatures started out mild, and they are expected to stay that way. Most of North Georgia was in the 40s and low 50s to start the day and should top out in the low 50s, according to Channel 2.

Atlanta’s projected high is 54 degrees.

Deon said North Georgia is in for “a nice treat as far as the weather is concerned” leading up to Christmas Day.

“Not only are we drying out in time for Christmas, we are going to warm up,” she said.

Tuesday’s high is a projected 67 degrees, about 15 degrees above average for this time of year. Numbers fall for the big day, but only slightly. Atlanta is expected to hit 63 degrees on Christmas, according to the latest forecast.

“Those mild temperatures will continue through the end of the week,” Deon said.

After Monday, she said the next opportunity for rain does not arrive until next weekend.

With the rain falling on already soggy soil, fallen trees have been reported across metro Atlanta. The list of road closures keeps growing Monday, WSB traffic reporter Ashley Frasca said.

“These are not affecting any interstates, but busy intersections nonetheless,” she said.

In Atlanta, a fallen tree is blocking Habersham Road at Peachtree Battle Avenue, as well as Emory Road at Briarcliff Road. The intersection of Waters and North Arnold Mill roads in Woodstock is also blocked by a tree, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
