Showers and thunderstorms making their way toward North Georgia on Monday are the makings of what will be a wet couple of days.
Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said the rain should hold off in metro Atlanta for a few more hours. Once it arrives midmorning, he said North Georgia will stay wet at times through Tuesday.
“Hang in there,” Nitz said. “A couple of days with showers and thunderstorms off and on, that’s today and tomorrow, and then we've got a nice stretch of warm weather.”
The bulk of the rain is still to the west of the state, but some showers are falling in northwest Georgia on Monday morning. Most of metro Atlanta is just seeing the mist and drizzle to start the day, according to Channel 2.
It is also cool with temperatures in the 50s.
“As we head through the day, that rain builds in between northwest Georgia and the metro area between 8 a.m. and noon,” Nitz said. “We'll continue off and on through the afternoon, tapering off a bit as we head into the evening.”
Tuesday could see more of the same, according to Channel 2. By Wednesday evening, Nitz said the northern half of metro Atlanta could pick up about an inch of rainfall, while areas to the south could see lesser amounts. In the mountains, up to 2 inches of rain are possible.
“A soaking rain here as we head through the next couple of days, then we're going to see the sunshine return and temperatures are much warmer the second half of the work week,” Nitz said.
Afternoon highs in the mid-80s are in the forecast by Friday, according to Channel 2.
Monday should be the chilliest day of the week with a projected high of 65 degrees. Nitz said it will be warmer to the south and west of Atlanta with afternoon highs near 70, but a cool northeast breeze will keep the mountains cooler in the upper 50s.
On Tuesday morning, much of North Georgia will be in the upper 50s to begin the day before Atlanta tops out at a projected 73 degrees, he said.
The rain chance is slightly lower Tuesday at 60%, down from a 90% chance Monday, according to Channel 2. The middle of the week should be mostly sunny.
A 20% chance of rain returns to the forecast Saturday as Nitz said an isolated shower is not out of the question. Sunday has a better chance of scattered showers, and afternoon temperatures drop back into the low 70s, according to Channel 2.
Conditions remain lighter than normal Monday with less drivers commuting to work and Georgia schools closed amid the coronavirus crisis.
There are no major delays on metro Atlanta interstates at 6 a.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
Those planning to catch a flight Monday morning can only use the main domestic security checkpoint at Hartsfield Jackson-International Airport. All other security checkpoints are closed.
