Despite the weekend being in sight, driving around Atlanta hasn’t been easy Friday afternoon, and it doesn’t look like the evening commute is any better.

Gwinnett County drivers are enduring heavy delays in both directions on Ga. 316 after a rollover crash near Sugarloaf Parkway, the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center reported. A right lane has reopened in both directions, but the whole area is gridlocked.

Also in Gwinnett, two right lanes of I-85 North are blocked by a crash at Beaver Ruin Road, the Traffic Center reported.

There are traffic problems outside of Gwinnett, too, such as I-20 West in DeKalb County. A crash at Panola Road has a right lane blocked, the Traffic Center reported.

A gas leak in Roswell has Dogwood Road at Riverside Road blocked as well, police told AJC.com. It’s unclear when the leak will be repaired.

Humidity is staying relatively low in North Georgia and temperatures are again comfortable, Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Brian Monahan said. After beginning the day in the low 70s, Atlanta has shot past the projected high of 86 to hit 88 degrees.

“We’re at 88 degrees, but you're saying, ‘It doesn't really feel that warm.’ That's because the dew point is 58 degrees, and dew points in the 50s are very comfortable,” Channel 2 chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said.

With the low humidity, the rain chances also stay low through much of the weekend.

“Today we're dry, tomorrow we're going to be dry,” Monahan said. “By Sunday, a little more moisture creeps in here, but overall we'll keep things pretty quiet around metro Atlanta.”

Isolated showers are 10% likely late in the day Sunday, Monahan said, and the northeast Georgia mountains have the best chance of getting a little rain.

The weekend is looking good for those headed to Georgia’s lakes, he said. Boaters and fishermen should expect comfortable temperatures in the mid- to upper 80s Saturday and Sunday with lake levels running slightly above full pool.

“Next week, though, I want to let you know the rain chances are going up,” Monahan said.

Summer isn’t quite done with North Georgia. Humidity is expected to build into the start of next week, bringing with it the return of muggy air, heat and and afternoon storms.

“The rain chance comes back by especially Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday,” he said. “Into next weekend, scattered storms are back in the forecast.”
