Showers are steadily moving across North Georgia on Friday morning, making for a wet and chilly drive into work and school.

Snow is mixing in with the rain as far south as Buford.

In higher elevations in Dawson County, big snowflakes were even reported, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan.

Monahan said it is just barely cold enough for the rain to turn to snow in the mountains.

For the rest of North Georgia, it’s just rain. And it will be sticking around.

“Those showers continue throughout most of the day,” he said. “It’s never going to be anything all that heavy, but you can plan on that wet weather all the way through your Friday.”

Roads should stay wet, not icy, according to Channel 2 meteorologist Katie Walls. Temperatures at road surfaces are in the mid- to upper 30s in northeast Georgia, where light snow is possible through the morning, Walls said.

With all the rain and clouds around, Monahan said it will stay chilly all day. Friday is starting in the 30s and low 40s, and those numbers aren’t likely to budge much for most of North Georgia. The projected high in Atlanta is 46 degrees.

“We just don’t get much of a warmup today,” he said. “You will want that heavier coat all day long. You'll want that umbrella, too.”

The one exception is the northwest corner of the state. Showers are less likely there, and as a result, sunshine will be a little more prevalent Friday, according to Channel 2. Areas from Calhoun to Rome could warm up to about 50 degrees, which is still below average for this time of year.

Monahan said there will be “more rain on the Southside, plenty of clouds and showers off and on through tonight.”

Some improvements are on the way for the weekend. Metro Atlanta will be back in the low 50s for highs, and dry conditions return under a partly cloudy sky, according to the latest forecast.

“Sunday is going to be great,” Monahan said. “Low 60s, mostly sunny, and we get even warmer into early next week.”

Delays could build as the rain makes makes roads slick. The biggest issues at 8:30 a.m. are in the northern suburbs, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

“Many issues on I-75 this morning,” traffic reporter Mark Arum said.

The latest crash on I-75 North past the North Marietta Parkway Loop is blocking a right lane, contributing to heavy delays through Marietta, the Traffic Center reported.

In downtown Marietta, downed power lines are causing several traffic lights to malfunction. Police are advising drivers to avoid the area if possible, according to the Traffic Center.
