A few showers are possible Friday, but Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said that’s no reason to cancel outdoor plans.
Clouds are expected to thicken throughout the day, and rain chances increase to about 20% in the afternoon.
“The impact from this rain? It's going to be low,” Monahan said. “I don’t think its going to slow you down very much today.”
While any showers that fall Friday will be light, the weekend will be a different story, he said.
Heavy rain is headed for Georgia by the second half of Sunday, according to Channel 2. Rain chances stay at 20% for Saturday but jump to 70% for the final hours of the weekend.
“Sunday is going to be your wet day this weekend,” Monahan said.
Despite the increasing chances for wet weather, North Georgia is staying warm. Temperatures were running about 8 degrees higher in Atlanta and 14 degrees higher on the Southside on Friday morning compared to the day before.
Atlanta’s starting temperature, 54 degrees, was actually a few degrees above the typical afternoon high for this time of year.
“You know when you are that warm at 5:10 in the morning, it is going to be a warm afternoon,” Monahan said. “And it will be today. We'll be back in the mid-60s for highs across North Georgia.”
The projected high for Atlanta is 64 degrees, according to Channel 2.
Temps will climb quickly Friday, and Monahan said they will do so even with more cloud cover. There will be less sunshine during the afternoon, he said.
Saturday should be warm with more hit-and-miss sprinkles. The weather looks good for the Peach Bowl parade down Peachtree Street on Saturday morning all the way through tailgating hours ahead of the college football semifinal game, he said.
As the rain moves in Sunday, Monahan said the suburbs could see a half-inch to an inch of accumulation. Lesser amounts are expected from Atlanta to the south, but areas in northwest Georgia and in the mountains could get up to 2 inches, according to Channel 2.
“Sunday is warm, even though we've got the rain and there could be a few storms,” Monahan said. “We'll be near 70 degrees. I’m tracking somewhat cooler air into the final days of 2019.”
With more Christmas travelers heading home Friday, volume is heavy on I-75 through the Southside for the second day in a row, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
Expect to sit in bumper-to-bumper delays from Mt. Zion Boulevard in Clayton County to Hudson Bridge Road in Henry, the Traffic Center reported at noon.
Congestion could get worse through the afternoon ahead of the evening commute. Drivers should allow “extra time to get to your destination,” according to the Traffic Center.
