If you’ve enjoyed the cooler mornings and mild afternoons from the past few days, you’re in luck Friday.

Conditions should be just fine across North Georgia on Friday as the pattern of midday warmups continue, according to Channel 2 Action News. Atlanta is not quite as chilly to start the day, with temperatures about 7 degrees higher than the day before.

That is not saying much considering there are still plenty of 30s in the northern suburbs Friday morning. But a warmer morning could also give way to a warmer afternoon.

“It’s going to be a nice, dry, quiet afternoon for you in the upper 60s in the mountains, but in the low to mid-70s today around metro Atlanta,” Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said.

The projected high for the city is 74 degrees.

Friday could be the last day this week without any rain. Monahan said there will be some clouds and showers around Saturday before the next chance for heavy rain arrives Sunday evening.

A cold front passing close to North Georgia will provide the fuel for another weekend of strong to severe storms, he said. While the timeline will be similar to last weekend’s severe weather outbreak that spawned deadly tornadoes, Monahan said he does not expect another outbreak Sunday.

“I think the risk is going to be highest south of I-20,” he said. “Through Griffin, Eatonton and LaGrange, I need you to be weather aware this weekend with the chance of some damaging wind gusts and an isolated, brief tornado.”

The chance for severe weather begins Sunday evening and continues into early Monday morning. Areas south of Atlanta are under a Level 3 or 5 risk for severe storms, according to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center.

The risk decreases to a Level 2 for most of metro Atlanta and a Level 1 for the Northside and the mountains.

“We do not need any more severe weather, and I wish I didn’t have to tell you about it,” Monahan said. “I want you to be thinking about how you will prepare for the weekend in case we do see some severe weather.”

The Weather Service has confirmed at least 23 tornadoes touched down across the state last weekend. The record for a two-day tornado outbreak is 42 tornadoes in January 2017, according to Channel 2.

Monahan said the risk of tornadoes is not as high for this weekend’s storm system. The chance of heavy rain increases to 90% Sunday and remains elevated at 70% for Monday morning before the system clears out, according to Channel 2.

At least with dry conditions Friday, there should be no weather impacts to travel to end the work week. Metro Atlanta interstates remain lighter than normal with fewer drivers on the roads amid Georgia’s shelter-in-place mandate.

There are no major crashes inside the Perimeter at 6 a.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
